Good yr around hike
The other reviews of this hike are many years old, so I thought an update was in guild. We hike this trail at least once a month year circular. The trail is v.2 miles full out and dorsum. It is a gravel/dirt surface and adequately flat. The trail goes through the Palouse River canyon with steep basalt walls. It is a dramatic change from surrounding hills. It is unusual not to encounter wild fauna. We have seen deer, coyotes, eagles, hawks, ducks, geese, vultures and numerous pocket-size birds. Similar many converted rail routes we accept hiked there are several apple and plum trees. The trail ends where the railroad crossed the Palouse River. A tunnel is visible across the river, but is complanate inside. The covered bridge that was farther on burned a few years ago. There are several gates on trail to incorporate cattle which are rarely nowadays. There is a nice parking area at the trailhead at the end of a dirt road. The signage could be better; use your GPS or simply follow the road n past the scrapyard and gravel piles.

Bill Chipman Palouse Trail
Dandy trail for biking between Pullman and Moscow
I only bike this trail, when I want to get to Pullman for some reason and prefer to cycle there rather than drive. I don't cull this trail to bike on for the scenery, considering the Latah Trail betwixt Moscow and Troy is a lot nicer. But I do similar this trail a lot. While you are parallel to the highway, which isn't a big highway by whatever means, it's not as loud and intrusive equally you might think.

Nice walk
My married woman and I walked two thirds of the trail. Finding the trail was a trivial catchy. When we got to the trailhead there was no existent sign identifying information technology, but information technology was obvious it was an abandoned rails road spur.
The trail bed is unimproved, but articulate of weeds. It is a gradual slope following the Palouse River. We spotted what looked like a great swimming pigsty and commented about how nice it would take been to take a skinny dip there.
About halfway downwardly the trail y'all come up across some other gate which did have a trail maker on information technology! A short altitude downward the trail from that gate, though, at that place is the remnants of an sometime bridge across a small gully. At that place is a sign at that place indicating the bridge is unsafe to cross, but at that place is a bypass path around that bridge.
The trail enters into a modest canyon which is very breathtaking. There appears to be a road above the canyon, but we did not notice any traffic. Due to the time, though, we had to turn back.
As nosotros reached the trailhead nosotros met some high school boys who said they were going upwardly to the swimming hole to take a dip. They did non appear to have pond trunks. Later, nosotros had to laugh almost what it would take been similar if they came across two people old plenty to be their grandparents skinny dipping in that hole, or if we had gone just a little further and then came across them every bit they were skinny dipping.
I believe this old spur would take eventually lead to a covered span, but it is apparently on private property and cannot be accessed. I would promise that the conservatory would piece of work with the county to suit access to the covered bridge. It would make the trail much more attractive.

An update for 2014
Previous descriptions even so hold true. The path equally information technology goes into Hellsgate Park is more of a campground path; okay pavement but narrower than the rest of the path. To cross Memorial Bridge it was a scrap confusing as in that location are no signs for where to go. As long as y'all know that's where the path continues, you lot should be able to detect it (on the north side of the Clearwater River, it's easiest to pick up the path on the west side of the bridge).

Beautiful trail
This trail has a bit everything, including views of the Palouse, a forested area, and bridges and tunnels. You tin can even park at Troy Urban center Park and go out your car overnight if yous merely feel like bicycling one way. It volition most likely be a destination trail once the Troy to Kendrick piece is consummate.

Good luck finding this trail
There are no markers or signs whatsoever. P for parking shown on the map doesn't exist. What I believe is the trail head looks but like all the individual holding around it, and has a cattle gate beyond it with livestock on the other side. The other end of trail might exist accessed, but the road is closed from Nov to March. We stopped by a local shop to ask where the trail was, and no one had heard of it. They said the only rail to trails they knew of was the Pullman-Moscow trail nigh 15 miles south. We finally found a guy who said he knew it. He told us it was not really a trail and we would have to climb over barbwire fences to utilize it. On the upside, after driving to both ends of the trail, it really appears to be a beautiful expanse. We'll try once again in March to come across if we tin can detect the other end of the trail. The access on W. River Dr is non-real.

Niggling Bear Canyon Leg
Equally indicated in the description Latah Trail continues beyond Troy downwards Piddling Bear Canyon. Eventually the Latah Trail Foundation would like to extend the trail downwardly to Kendrick, but as of 2013, information technology simply goes iv miles.
The positives: Little Behave Canyon is very secluded, at that place is no road next to the trail. The bridges that take been completed are in excellent condition, a cement overlay on existing rail road trusses.
The course seems to exist between 3% and 5% so going downwardly the ride is quite piece of cake.
The negatives: the trail bed consists of very loose gravel. I would not recommend information technology for any street cycle. My wife and I used mountain bikes, and we found ourselves having to work to control our steering.
As we returned up the form, the gravel impacted our ability to wheel back upward the form. We eventually had to walk out the last mile, merely I recall that was more a reflection of our athletic skills.
Definitely have water. While the trail follows a stream, much of the stream is on private state on either side of the trail. The water is not potable.
At that place is a uncompleted shelter at most the two mile mark. I would hope the foundation will complete it in the near future.
I wait forward to having this trail completed all the mode to Kendrick. Information technology is a great canyon ride in spite of the loose gravel.

Lots of Wildlife, Beautiful Scenery
Nigh of the trail is wide enough for two people to ride horses side by side. There is a minor, spring loaded gate at the beginning of the ride that my friend got off to open, I was able to advisedly ride through. At that place was a large gate that we were able to open up from horseback. There was also one gate to ride effectually (become on the uphill side). There was one water crossing with some big rocks and a trivial mud- keep to the uphill side to avoid a canal. at that place is a petty train trestle blazon thing that is abandoned. There is a ride effectually trail that has a short and somewhat steep pass up, so a little apartment area, then right upwards the other short and steep side. Our horses did fine on everything. Lots of wildlife. We saw quite a few joggers/walkers. Everyone was very overnice.

Trail is blocked
I enjoyed what I saw of the trail, but around the ii.8 mile marker the trail was blocked past tons of actually Big boulders. Had to turn around.
